Writing interesting characters sometimes involves going beyond the norm and convention. A mysterious main character is one way that you can make your story have more of an intrigue and depth compared to other books out there. However, there is a fine line between having an intriguing mysterious character and having just a plain confusing main character. So, let’s explore how to write a mysterious main character the right way.

How to Write a Mysterious Protagonist

First, Know the Secret

The first thing that you need to do as the writer is understand that your main character is mysterious to your audience and not you. You as the author need to know what your main character is hiding and why this matters. This could be a core secret or something that they have a strong stake in.

Show the Goal, Hide the Motives

Another thing that you need to try and strive for is to let the readers see what the main character wants. This is basically the clear goal of your main character, but you need to sort of obscure the deeper motivation until it’s necessary for your story.

This will keep your main character mysterious without being confusing and unclear to your readers.

Drip the Hints

One thing that some writers get wrong when it comes to writing mysterious main characters is that they tend to dump too much information at once about their main character. Realistically, you can’t have your main character be mysterious and then dump all the information.

Instead, you need to think of the flow of information like a drop going into a bucket. Drip feed the readers with small hints and build up to the big reveal.

Let Your World React

The idea of having a mysterious main character implies that the world around this mysterious person will react to them as well. There may be gossip, wanted posters, whispered titles, sudden nicknames, etc… Maybe the side characters don’t understand why certain people call your main character “The Revenant” or something like that. Have the world react to your main character too!

Quick Beat Ideas That Can Help Build Mystery:

  • A guard calls your main character by a childhood nickname. They don’t react until the guard is gone.
  • They dodge every personal question except one oddly specific topic (old bridges, antique locks).
  • Laughter at a tavern dies when they walk in. The barkeep sets down a drink “on the house,” hands shaking.

Ready to build an enigma readers can’t stop thinking about?
