The thing about fantasy is that magic is almost one of the core features of a fantasy world. However, there are some magic systems that you see in books that are either too vague or too technical to the point where you find yourself a bit confused. That’s why for today’s post, I’ll be talking about how you can create a magic system for world building that’s engaging and logical for your ideas.

Step 1: What Does Magic Mean in Your World?

Magic systems aren’t built in a vacuum. They typically emerge from culture, history, belief, fear, and power. Before designing spell lists or cool magical tattoos, ask:

  • Who controls magic?
  • Who fears it?
  • Who encourages it?

Questions like these can help plant some ideas in your head for your system.

Step 2: Define What Magic Can and Can’t Do

A good magic system needs to have some level of boundary, or what is possible and impossible within it. It’s possible that not everyone in your world is aware of all the rules, but you as the world builder should have a good idea of your rules.

Think about what it costs to use magic as well. One thing that seems to get overlooked sometimes is the toll of magic on the practitioner of the system. Think about what logically operates in your world and how magic plays into that logic as well.
