I’m a big fan of the romantasy genre and it’s really an enjoyable subgenre of both fantasy and romance. Romantasy revolves around a romance story that is set in the context of a fantasy world. These stories focus heavily on a story of love which is tested by peril, conflict, or something similar. Basically, think books like A Court of Thorns and Roses or Caraval. Of course, we all sometimes need some help with inspiration for our stories, which is why I’ve curated a list of over 50 writing prompts for the romantasy subgenre.
Even if the story is a romance at its core, you’ll still need to focus on creating a proper fantasy world as well. So, before I give you 50+ romantasy prompts to help start your next story, let’s talk about what’s necessary to craft the perfect romantasy story.

Crafting the Perfect Romantasy Book
- World Building: Romantasy novels are still set within the fantasy genre, meaning that they will include a decently good level of world building.
- Magical Systems: As with any fantasy novel, even if the magic is not central to the story, the magic system exists to some extent in the background.
- Romance: Of course, a good romantasy novel needs a romance story at its center.
- Dynamic Characters: Characters in a good romantasy story, or really any story, must be dynamic. Dynamic means that they change, adjust, and grow over the course of the story.
- Conflict and Adventure: Most romantasy stories include some sort of adventure, quest, and plenty of conflict. Conflict allows for the love to be tested or to grow, and adventure lets them grow close together.
