Paranormal romance (PNR) is romance with a core of something supernatural. Think fated mates, vampire lords, witches with inconvenient crushes, demon hunters falling for demons, ghosts, angels, fae, shifters… if the central love story involves at least one character (or setting) that’s not strictly human-as-we-know-it, you’re in PNR territory. So for today’s post, I’ll be talking about what paranormal romance is and how you can get started writing your own paranormal romance book.

The Core Ingredients of Paranormal Romance
- A central romance arc
Two (or more) leads meet, spark, collide, grow, and commit. If you removed the spooky stuff and the story breaks, you’re doing it right because the supernatural is essential to the love story. - A supernatural layer
One or both leads are nonhuman or wield otherworldly power; the setting may include hidden societies, magic, curses, bloodlines, or cosmic rules. - High emotional + supernatural stakes
The emotions are tense and powerful and there are high stakes tied to the supernatural component of the story. - A promised payoff
Readers expect an emotionally satisfying resolution: Happily Ever After or at least Happy For Now.

Popular PNR Tropes & Pairings
- Fated mates / destined lovers
- Enemies to lovers (hunter × vampire, witch × demon lord)
- Forbidden romance (angel × reaper, siren × sailor)
- Secret royalty / hidden lineage
- Curse breaking (love is the missing ingredient)
- Protective alpha × powerful heroine (or flip it!)
- Human × nonhuman (vampire, shifter, fae, dragon, ghost, incubus/succubus, psychic, necromancer)
World Building Matters for PNR
In paranormal romance, one thing that’s important to consider is the fact that world building is very important for the development of the story. Since you’re dealing with the supernatural, and potentially even something close to fantasy, you need to ground some world rule logic.
The best resource for world building that can help you learn everything is my Ultimate Guide to World Building, which is a 340+ page workbook/guide that helps you work through tons of prompting questions with lots of instructional material on how to design all aspects of an entire universe and planet.
Structure You Can Lean On
A lot of books fall under the three-act structure, which is basically where you split your main plotline into three distinct parts. Romance novels have a bit of an interesting version of the three-act structure, which you can read about in this post here 👉 How to Outline a Romance Novel Easily!
Prompting Ideas for PNR
Here are some examples of writing prompts that you might see in paranormal romance books:
- Hunter × Quarry: A dhampir tasked with staking a vampire prince discovers they’re bonded by an old blood oath neither asked for.
- Curse Breaker: A librarian witch must kiss her sworn enemy (a cursed fae general) at moonrise to save her coven… and he’s the only one who can read the spell she needs.
- Bodyguard Bond: A stoic werewolf is hired to protect a human medium whose visions are killing her unless they can anchor her together.

FAQs
For the most part, yes. HEA is sort of what a lot of romance readers are expecting, especially in PNR.
There needs to be something in the world that dips into the non-human. It’s easiest to have at least one non-human lead, but you can add something like a curse or something similar to that.
