100+ Fantasy Writing Prompts to Start Your Next Story

A lot of the posts I make tend to revolve around fantasy novels and books. Beyond fantasy being my favorite genre, fantasy tends to be one of the best for expressing the maximum amount of creativity, aside from science-fiction. Fantasy tends to require intense levels of world building, with writers developing anything from the religion down to the names of mountain ranges. Of course, sometimes, we all need a spark of inspiration, which is why fantasy writing prompts are really helpful. 

But before I give you 100 fantasy prompts for you to use, let’s talk about what’s necessary to craft the perfect fantasy story.

Crafting the Perfect Fantasy Book

No two fantasy books are alike, so of course, there’s going to be a lot of variety in the different fantasy stories out there. However, even with all this variety, there are a few common ties between fantasy books that we can easily observe: 

• World building 
• Intense magic system
• High stakes conflicts
• Heroes and villains
• Complex and dynamic characters
• Exciting plots
• (Bonus: Romance)
