Romantasy is everywhere right now. It’s dominating TikTok, climbing Kindle charts, and helping indie authors go viral seemingly overnight. But while it’s easy to fall in love with the genre as a reader, writing one that truly works and that resonates emotionally and stands out in a crowded market, is a different story altogether. Coming up with a good romantasy idea can feel a little difficult but it seems like so many great ideas have already been written. A lot of writers get stuck before they even start and they scroll Pinterest hoping to find some inspo from the images flooding their feed. So, that’s why I came up with 20 hand-crafted romantasy writing prompts designed specifically for romantasy writers who don’t just want concepts, but actual story-starters that help them get writing!

What Makes a Good Romantasy Prompt?

Romantasy isn’t just a fantasy book with the concept of a romance sprinkled in between a few chapters here and there. It’s a genre where both the fantasy and the love story have to be central and interwoven into the plot to matter.

That means a strong romantasy prompt should contain:

  • A high-stakes setting (kingdoms, curses, magical trials, enchanted forests)
  • An emotional conflict (forbidden love, reluctant allies, rival dynasties)
  • A fantasy hook (a prophecy, a spell, a blood pact, a magical bond)
  • A romantic arc with deep emotional stakes and gradual development

A good romantasy prompt introduces not just plot potential, but emotional tension and narrative pull. The goal isn’t to inspire a story you’ll drop in a week. Instead, you want to have an idea for a story that’s so good, you won’t be able to stop thinking about it until the last page.

How to Turn a Prompt into a Real Book

Prompts are only the spark. To turn one into a full romantasy novel, you need depth, development, and direction. Where a lot of writers hit walls with prompts is that they aren’t sure what to do after they’ve got the prompt they want to use in mind.

Here’s how to begin building your story:

  1. Pick the prompt that resonates with you the most. If your brain lights up and you start imagining characters or scenes, follow that trail.
  2. Identify the love interests. Who are they? What’s broken in them? What do they want versus what they need?
  3. Sketch the world. What magic exists? What makes this setting dangerous or enchanting? How does the world raise the emotional stakes?
  4. Ask what keeps them apart. Is it a prophecy? A blood feud? A curse? Personal trauma?
  5. Develop the stakes. How does the romance affect the fate of the world—or vice versa? Is love the key to saving everything, or the cause of its unraveling?
  6. Use the prompt pack. There’s space to brainstorm plots, identify tropes, map emotional arcs, and bring your story to life.
